TYPES OF FASTS

Fasting helps quiet everything else so our relationship with God can come into focus and bring fresh life to our spirit.

  • This type of fast involves removing certain elements from your diet. One example of a selective fast is the Daniel Fast, during which you remove meat, sweets, and bread from your diet and consume water and juice for fluids and fruits and vegetables for food.

  • In this type of fast, you drink only liquids, typically water with light juices as an option.

  • This fast is sometimes called the “Jewish Fast” and involves abstaining from eating any type of food in the morning and afternoon. This can either correlate to specific times of the day, such as 6:00 am to 3:00 pm, or from sunup to sundown.

  • This fast is a great option if you do not have much experience fasting food, have health issues that prevent you from fasting food, or if you wish to refocus certain areas of your life that are out of balance. For example, you might choose to stop using social media or watching television for the duration of the fast and then carefully bring that element back into your life in healthy doses at the conclusion of the fast.

Why pray?

Prayer begins with a burden to embrace our brokenness. We take our limitations to God, embracing what we cannot do in order to trust Him with what only He can do. Prayer aligns our heart with His — changing us, shaping us, encouraging us, helping us to hear His voice and trust His wisdom. Prayer puts us in a posture of humility because we must face our own limited power while asking God to use His power to work in and through us.

Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. — Isaiah 59:1

Why fast?

Fasting isn’t about proving anything to God, it’s about creating space for Him. When we intentionally step away from something that normally fills our time, focus, or appetite, we quiet the noise of everyday life and become more aware of what God is saying. Throughout Scripture, fasting is used to seek clarity, break unhealthy patterns, and draw closer to God, and during Pray 21 it helps us realign our hearts and attention toward Him. It’s not about how intense your fast is, but how intentionally you use that space to pray, listen, and grow.
